N, Nitrates, KNO3:
Potassium Nitrate is a key Macronutrient vital for plant growth. Potassium Nitrate should be used in conjunction with macronutrients P and K as well as with Micronutrient fertilizer.
Analysis:
(KNO3 – 23.15%)
- KNO3 - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +12.23ppm
- 1 pump, 2cc, contains 463mg dissolved KNO3
- 1 pump per 10 gal raises KNO3 concentration by 12.23ppm
Dosages:
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons twice weekly.
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons every other day for densely planted high-tech tanks with CO2 injection
- If algae growth increases reduce dosage
Index dosage:
- Test tank water for dissolved nutrient content frequently and adjust dosage to maintain optimal dissolved nutrient content: 10-20 ppm dissolved KNO3 (5-10 ppm NO3)
Water changes:
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons of new water before water changes.
Analysis breakdown:
(K – 7.85%) (N – 2.80%) (NO3 – 12.45%)
- K, Potassium - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +4.15ppm
- N, Nitrogen - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +1.48ppm
- NO3, Nitrate - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +6.58ppm
Keeping 10-20 ppm dissolved KNO3
(5-10 ppm NO3)
is optimal for high-tech planted tanks with CO2 injection.
Keep KNO3 as a limiting factor for plant growth if algae occur. Excess Nitrate and Phosphate Macronutrients can contribute to algae growth and dosage should be reduced if algae growth increases.
P, Phosphate, KH2PO4:
Potassium Phosphate is a key Macronutrient vital for plant growth. Potassium Phosphate should be used in conjunction with macronutrients N and K as well as with Micronutrient fertilizer.
Analysis:
(KH2PO4 – 5.5%)
- KH2PO4 - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +2.9ppm
- 1 pump, 2cc, contains 110mg dissolved KH2PO4
- 1 pump per 10 gal raises KH2PO4 concentration by 2.9ppm
Dosages:
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons twice weekly.
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons every other day for densely planted high-tech tanks with CO2 injection
- If algae growth increases reduce dosage
Index dosage:
- Test tank water for dissolved nutrient content frequently and adjust dosage to maintain optimal dissolved nutrient content: 3-5 ppm dissolved KH2PO4 (0.5-1 ppm PO4)
Water changes:
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons of new water before water changes.
Analysis breakdown:
(K – 2.0%) (P – 2.5%) (PO4 – 1.0%)
- K, Potassium - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +1.06ppm
- P, Phosphorus - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +1.32ppm
- PO4, Phosphate - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +0.53ppm
Keeping 3-5ppm dissolved KH2PO4
(0.5-1ppm PO4)
is optimal for high-tech planted tanks with CO2 injection.
Keep KH2PO4 as a limiting factor for plant growth if algae occur. Excess Nitrate and Phosphate Macronutrients can contribute to algae growth and dosage should be reduced if algae growth increases.
K, Potassium Sulfate, K2SO4:
Potassium Sulfate is a key Macronutrient vital for plant growth. Potassium Sulfate should be used in conjunction with macronutrients N and P as well as with Micronutrient fertilizer.
Analysis:
(K2SO4 -9.5%)
- Δppm/1pump/10gal = +5ppm
- 1 pump, 2cc, contains 190mg dissolved K2SO4
- 1 pump per 10 gal raises concentration by 5ppm
Dosages:
- Dose 2 pumps per 10 gallons twice weekly.
- Dose 2 pumps per 10 gallons every other day for densely planted high-tech tanks with CO2 injection
Water changes:
- Dose 4 pumps per 10 gallons of new water before water changes.
Analysis breakdown:
(K – 6.79%)(SO4 – 2.71%)
-K, Potassium - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +3.6ppm
-SO4, Sulfate - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +1.4ppm
Keeping >20-40ppm dissolved K2SO4 is optimal for high-tech planted tanks with CO2 injection.
It’s unlikely to over-dose K2SO4 in a planted aquarium and it should never be the limiting factor for plant growth. Dosing additional K2SO4 will not cause algae growth.
If algae occur do not reduce dosage, continue to supply K so that higher order plants can absorb other excess nutrients that would otherwise be absorbed by algae.
M, Micros:
Micronutrients, sometimes called ‘trace elements’ are vital for plant growth. Micronutrient fertilizer should be used in conjunction with N, P, and K macro element fertilizers.
Dosages:
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons twice weekly.
- Increase dosage for densely planted and high-tech tanks with CO2 injection.
- If algae occurs reduce dosage frequency.
Water changes:
- Dose 1 pump per 10 gallons of new water before water change for typical tanks.
Analysis:
(SO4-6.21%) (Mg-4.73%) (K-2.55%) (Fe-0.51%) (Mn-0.072%) (Zn-0.0215%) (Mo-0.002%) (B-0.0018%) (Co-0.00018%) (Ni-0.0001%)
SO4, Sulfate - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +3.28ppm
Mg, Magnesium - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +2.50ppm
K, Potassium - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +1.35ppm
Fe, Iron - Δppm/1pump/10gal = +0.26ppm
1 pump, 2cc, contains:
(10mg Fe) (95mg Mg) (50mg K) (124mg SO4)
1 pump per 10 gal raises Mg by 2.50 ppm
1 pump per 10 gal raises Fe by 0.26 ppm
Keep Micro-nutrients as a limiting factor for plant growth if algae occurs.
Typically, higher order plants can store Micronutrients for longer than lower order algae can. For this reason limiting the frequency of Micronutrient dosing can prevent algae growth.
